Two Singaporean brothers were given jail sentences after being involved in two separate incidents; one where they assaulted a police officer and another where they attacked a woman.
Incident 1: Confrontation With Police in Sembawang Park
On 12 February 2024, officers on patrol at Sembawang Park encountered the brothers and others including their mother and Saravanan’s wife — sitting on personal mobility aids (PMAs), playing loud music, smoking, and consuming alcohol. Smoking and loud music are prohibited in Singapore’s public parks.
When a police officer asked them to reduce the volume and stop smoking, the situation escalated. The brothers refused to cooperate, questioned the officer’s authority and allegedly challenged him to a fight. Saravanan even provided a false identity number and attempted to flee on his PMA, only to be stopped by the officer. He then reportedly rammed his body into the officer and continued verbally abusing him. During the incident, Saravanan’s wife also struck the officer, and other family members were present.
Incident 2: Assault on Woman Outside Sembawang Condo
In a separate episode on 27 July 2024, the same brothers were involved in an altercation outside Skypark Residences condominium in Sembawang. According to reporting, they were riding their PMAs at high speed when a local woman called out to them to slow down.
In response, Saravanan allegedly shoved her phone away and confronted her, while Mogan slapped her with his slipper, leaving her with injuries. They also reportedly verbally abused the woman, taunting her about her residence.
Court Outcome
At the hearing, both defendants faced several charges, including voluntarily causing hurt, using criminal force to obstruct a public servant, and violating harassment laws. The judge, after accepting their guilty pleas and considering the remaining charges, meted out custodial sentences, five weeks for Mogan and seven weeks for Saravanan.
