Updates, Singapore, 27/12/2022: Fadhil Yusop, 38, was sentenced to 18 months in prison and six cane strokes.
He pleaded guilty to three charges, including reckless endangering of life and causing bodily harm voluntarily with a dangerous weapon. Another two charges were taken into account during the sentencing process.
The court heard that Fadhil left his house around noon on March 14, 2022, with a 63cm long samurai sword or katana.
He went to Buangkok Crescent around 2.15pm, held the sword in his right hand, and walked in the middle of the road.
Fadhil then swung his sword at four passing vehicles, causing damage that could cost up to S$1,000 to repair.
A short time later, a man walking home from the supermarket approached a traffic light intersection and waited for the light to turn green in his favor.
He was walking down the street with his groceries in one hand and his phone in the other when he noticed Fadhil standing in the middle of the road slashing vehicles with his sword.
The pedestrian recorded Fadhil’s actions as he approached him with his phone. Fadhil slashed the victim three times on his arm and shoulder with the sword.
Some bystanders then ran over to Fadhil and pinned him to the ground.

15/03/2022: The Singapore Police Force had released a statement on the incident.
The SPF FB post state “Preliminary investigations revealed that the man had allegedly consumed some unknown pills prior to leaving his home with the sword.”
The police raided the man’s residence and seized two packets of yellow pills.
The man had previously been remanded in the Institute of Mental Health and diagnosed with substance use disorder.
The man was last released from prison on 30 July 2020 after having serving a sentence of nine months and two weeks for multiple offences.
Commander of Ang Mo Kio Police Division, Assistant Commissioner of Police Zed Teo said that the Police will be presenting the 6 members of public that helped to subdued the man with the Public Spiritedness Award in recognition of their brave actions.”
Singapore, 14/3/2022: The sword wielding man captured on camera today at Buangkok Cresecent had been arrested by the police for criminal intimidation and possession of an offensive weapon.
In the footage that was circulating online, a man was seen holding a sword while walking down the middle of the road. As he walk down the road he was seen to be waving the sword and swerving it at the road.
He then make a U-turn and walk towards the other side of the road. As car move pass him, he strike the car with the sword.
After striking a few car, he proceed to walk towards the pedestrian pathway and suddenly start to strike a passerby. He was eventually subdued by members of the public.
The police said they responded to a call for help at about 1.55pm on Monday after a man was seen wielding a sword in the vicinity of Buangkok Square.
Anyone found guilty of possessing an offensive weapon in a public place may be jailed for up to three years and caned not fewer than six strokes.
For criminal intimidation, the man could be jailed for up to two years, fined, or both.
