What happened
The woman, identified in media reports as Ms Tan Mei Zhen, was seated outside the bar with a 35-year-old man. She was reportedly waiting with her manager for a Grab ride home when the crash occurred.
A Mercedes involved in the collision ended up crashing through a renovation hoarding at Far East Square. Two other cars were also involved.
According to her manager, as quoted in news reports, their ride was only about a minute away and there was no time to react before the car struck them.
Both the woman and the man were conscious when they were taken to Singapore General Hospital. A 39-year-old male driver of another car had minor injuries but declined to be taken to hospital.
Victim died on Oct 23
Ms Tan was declared brain dead on Oct 23. The police confirmed her death in an update on Oct 26.
She had reportedly just been promoted to restaurant manager, and was planning a wedding and a BTO flat with her fiancé. Her family has said they hope for justice and want drink driving to be taken seriously.
Driver arrested
A 37-year-old woman who was driving one of the cars was arrested for drink driving. Police said she will be investigated for careless driving causing death while under the influence of drink.
Investigations are ongoing.
Our thoughts
Our deepest condolences to Ms Tan’s family, fiancĂ© and friends.
A reminder to all road users: if you drink, don’t drive. Take a taxi, a ride-hail, or arrange a designated driver. One decision can change many lives forever.
