A driver has been arrested following a fatal traffic accident in Chinatown that claimed the life of a six-year-old girl.

The incident occurred on Friday, 6 February 2026, along South Bridge Road, near the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple. A car struck two pedestrians, a six-year-old girl and her 31-year-old mother, as they were crossing the road.

Both victims were conscious when they were taken to hospital. However, the young girl later succumbed to her injuries, while her mother remains hospitalised with serious injuries.
The 38-year-old female driver was arrested on the same day and is assisting police with investigations.
According to Lianhe Zaobao, the mother and daughter were tourists from Indonesia. Following the child’s death, family members travelled to Singapore, and the girl’s body has since been repatriated to Indonesia with assistance from the Indonesian Embassy.

Allegations circulating online
In the aftermath of the accident, unverified claims circulated online alleging that the driver had blamed the victims for the collision, suggesting they had crossed the road unexpectedly.

The case has sparked renewed public discussion on road safety, particularly in busy pedestrian areas frequented by families and tourists.
